Olfasense is collaborating partner in Odeuropa project

Odeuropa project

Scientists across Europe will attempt to create a digital library of old European smells.

The project, named ”ODEUROPA: Negotiating Olfactory and Sensory Experiences in Cultural Heritage Practice and Research” has gained a €2.8M grant from the EU Horizon 2020 programme to identify and catalogue different odours described by Europeans between the past five centuries.

The project consortium covers the expertise from many disciplines: history, linguistics, heritage science, chemistry, and the fragrance industry, to name only a few.

The aim is to develop an online encyclopedia of historical European smells, based on novel methods to collect odour descriptions from old multinational digital texts and images.

Besides the odour description, this European olfactory archive will include information on the use of different odours and how their perception has changed over time. The project also plans to use their findings to recreate the smells of the past, together with chemists and perfumers, to enable future generations to access and learn about the scented past.

Olfasense is happy to be contributing know-how and capabilities in odour identification, including GC-MS and GC-Sniffing, as one of Odeuropa’s main collaborating partners.

These are International Flavours and Fragrances (IFF); Olfasense, Mediamatic Amsterdam; Museum Ulm; National and University Library of Slovenia (NULS); Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage (DICH); The Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History; the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO (SNCU); The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM); and the NOSE Network.

The Odeuropa project will be led by scientists from the Humanities Cluster of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (Netherlands); the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany); the Fondazione Bruno Kessler (Italy); EURECOM Sophia Antipolis (France); the Anglia Ruskin University (UK); the Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia); and the University College London (UK).
