Publication in the Global Ingredients & Formulations Guide 2016

Our odour experts Dr Nathalie Nibbe, Dr Hansruedi Gygax and Björn Maxeiner give an answer on how GC-IMS can be used for determining differences and similarities of perfume dupes in the 2016 edition of the Global Ingredients & Formulations Guide 2016.

Abstract – “Molecular Analysis for Determining Differences and Similarities of Perfume Dupes”; Dr. Hansruedi Gygax, Dr. Nathalie Nibbe, Björn Maxeiner

A perfume dupe is a perfume which is similar to a branded product but is sold for a much lower price. The German “Markenschutzgesetz” (law for protection of branded products) is very strict, as the line between the legal perfume and the illegal forgery is very small. However, the market for these twins is increasing. To determine if perfume dupes are really similar, human sensory evaluation is essential. The objective is to check if humans can perceive differences in the odour profile. It should be noted that differences in perception might appear only some time after application. Another approach for testing differences in perfumes is molecular analysis. Different analytical methods are available and have their pro’s and con’s. The following article describes the analysis of perfumes with the GC-IMS. This methodology is relatively young and allows quick analysis at low price.
